Day 5, Palamari, the pre-historic civilization

Any guide book on Skyros will mention Palamari, an archaeological site of located on the northeast part of the island of Skyros, not far from the airport. It is easily accessible on an unmarked dirt road, about 3 miles through the fields.

It was humbling and breathtaking to wander in a prehistoric fortified settlement, from the Early and Middle Bronze Age (3000-2000 BC). What were these people’s lives like? What were their worries, fears and aspirations?

A fortification wall surrounds the colony, supported with a number of horseshoe towers. Houses with courtyards, terraces and fireplaces, cisterns, storage areas, workshop structures, roads and pipelines- we are in awe! We learned that a large part of the settlement remains today under the sea, submerged beneath the sea due to erosion, rising sea levels, or other geological processes.

Later in the museum in Chora we will marvel at the beautiful pottery and tools discovered at the site. More on that to come…
